A Vibrant Musical Collaboration
On March 13, 2024, Zolene and the ALS Band took center stage to perform for the Clover High School Marching Band from South Carolina, USA. The event unfolded in Larne, which has been twinned with the town of Clover since 1996. This partnership traces back to the 19th century when people from Ulster and County Antrim emigrated to South Carolina, specifically to Clover. The 160-piece marching band had planned to perform in Dublin on St. Patrick’s Day but stopped in Larne first to celebrate the shared history of the two towns.
Zolene and the ALS Band’s Special Performance
The local council approached Zolene and the band, who felt thrilled to participate in such a significant event. While their current music set heavily draws from American influences, they eagerly learned and performed American-themed music requested by the local council. Their lineup included James Taylor’s “Carolina in My Mind,” Woody Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land,” the classic “Route 66,” and the patriotic American National Anthem – “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
A Day of Success and Celebration
The event proved to be a success, and, unusually for Northern Ireland, the weather stayed dry. Zolene and the ALS Band entertained the crowds that were eagerly awaiting the Clover Band’s procession to the football stadium. They felt honored not only to perform but also to witness the fantastic show by the Clover High School Marching Band. Zolene, overcoming some initial nerves, delivered a fantastic rendition of the American National Anthem, delighting the audience and, most importantly, the American visitors.
Lasting Impact and Appreciation
Since the performance, Zolene and & ALS Band have received numerous appreciative comments both in person and on social media. Videos of their rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner have been shared widely, from Northern Ireland to the USA, gathering fantastic feedback. All round a great day was had by all and will be a fun memory for the band.
